History
The city of Kanop , which in modern Egypt is the eastern region of Alexandria , was the seat of the episcopal pulpit in the 4th century. Currently near Abukir there are excavations of Canopus ( abouna Kir ). The Diocese of Canopa was part of the Alexandrian Patriarchate .
According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, the Canopian bishop extended his jurisdiction to the dioceses of Menelait and Schedea as well . Two bishops of the diocese are known - Atlas (mentioned in 325) and Agathodem (mentioned in 362).
In the history of the church, the city of Canopa is known for the martyrdom of St. Cyrus , whose relics were transferred to Rome in the 7th century.
Since 1760, the diocese of Canopa has been the titular diocese of the Roman Catholic Church. In 1946, the titular diocese of Canopa was abolished.
