Around 1277, Kaballarius held the position of great constable (chief of Latin mercenaries). Together with the great stratopedarch John Sinadin, he led the Byzantine army against the ruler of Thessaly John I Duci , but was defeated at the Battle of Farsalus and soon died of his wounds.
