Biography

Karl von Schreibers arrived in Vienna at the age of 9, studied at the Lowenburg Monastery in 1784, and from 1793 began to study medicine. Until 1795, he worked as an assistant to the phrenologist Franz Joseph Gall . After receiving his Ph.D. degree in 1798, Schreibers worked as a doctor with his uncle and traveled to several European countries in 1799. In 1801, he became assistant professor of natural sciences at the University of Vienna, , whose lectures he supplemented from 1802 to 1807. Along with this, he also conducted medical practice.

Schreibers began early to study botany, mineralogy, as well as zoology and made contacts in this area with European scientists. On their initiative, he was engaged in little-known proteins . In 1806, he was appointed director of the imperial Cabinet of Natural Sciences ( de: Kk Hof-Naturalienkabinette ), the collection of which he significantly expanded. In 1809, he actively participated in the evacuation of the collection to protect against Napoleonic troops. In 1817, Prince Metternich instructed Schreibers to lead a scientific expedition to Brazil. Schreibers ultimately became the founder of the Vienna-based Natural History Museum, which was built according to the scientific point of view. In 1812, he became a freelance member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

Schreibers described a meteorite, named in his honor as a shreibersit .
