Animal migration

Animal migration (from Lat. Migrans) is the regular movement of an animal population , during which individuals from one habitat move to another, but then return. Migrations are most common in birds (bird migrations ) and fish (for example, Pacific salmon migrations). Animals have less studied migration, since they lead a more secretive lifestyle. Examples of animal migrations are the migration of reindeer from the tundra to the forest-tundra with the onset of winter; it is caused by the shortage and difficulties of foraging in the snow-covered tundra. Animal migrations have a pronounced adaptive (adaptive) character and arose in the process of evolution in a variety of species.

Types of Migration

Migrations can be divided into active (animals move themselves) and passive (animals move on ice or sweep water). Active migrations can be divided by the time intervals in which they occur:

  • Active
    • Seasonal migration
    • Daily migration
    • Periodic migration

Example

As an example, seasonal movements of microscopic animals from the deep part of the lakes to shallow waters, associated with changes in water temperature, and the migration of whales that swim from the polar regions to the subtropics in autumn, where their young are born, and return to cold waters at the end of spring .

Explanation of Migration

The movement of animals is caused by the need to change living conditions or is associated with the passage of a development cycle.
