General information
Primosten is located 20 kilometers south-east of the provincial capital - Sibenik , 33 kilometers north-west of Trogir . The old city is located on the peninsula, and the rest stretches along the sea. The Adriatic highway runs through the city; it is connected by regular bus services to the largest cities in Croatia.
Primosten is one of the most important tourist centers in Croatia with a developed infrastructure.
History
It was originally a fishing village on an island connected to the mainland by a bridge, which is why its name came about. In the XVI-XVIII centuries belonged to the Republic of Venice . At this time, the architectural ensemble of the Old Town took shape. Since the 17th century, the city was protected by a powerful wall with towers. In 1542, the Turks tried to seize Primosten, but were repelled. After that, the island was connected by a dam to the mainland. In 1564, the city was first mentioned under a modern name.
Since the 1960s it has been developing as a tourist center. Also, residents are engaged in fishing, winemaking and growing olives.

Primosten is especially famous for its vast and picturesque vineyards (the famous red wine “Babich” is made). In 2005, the Croatian government put Primosten vineyards on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites . A photograph of one of Primosten's vineyards adorns the wall of a UN building in New York.
