Alexander Belich ( August 2, 1876 , Belgrade - February 26, 1960 , Belgrade) - Serbian linguist, chairman of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts , corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences .

Biography

Alexander Belich was born on August 2, 1876 in Belgrade [4] .

In 1895-1898 he studied at the Novorossiysk and Moscow universities [5] . December 4, 1910 was elected a corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences [6] . In 1913, together with Lubomir Stoyanovich, he founded the journal Јuzhnoslovensky philologist ’, whose editor Belich was from 1913 to 1960 [7] .

In 1928, under the auspices of Alexander Belich, the Committee of Russian Culture was established in Belgrade ( Serbhorv . Ruski kulturni odbor ) and in 1933, on his initiative, the Russian House named after Emperor Nicholas II was built, which became the center of the cultural, scientific and religious life of the Russian emigrant community in the interwar Yugoslavia [8] .

From 1937 to 1960 he was chairman of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts [9] . In 1958, he led the Yugoslav delegation at the IV International Congress of Slavists in Moscow [3] . Honorary professor of Moscow State University and the University of Glasgow , member of the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts , the Slovak Academy of Sciences, the Czech Academy of Sciences, the Polish Academy of Knowledge (1923), the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1947), the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (1956).
