Biography
Born on October 25 ( November 7 ), 1905, in the village of Pisklovo (now Kursk Oblast ). In 1933 he graduated from the Voronezh Agricultural Institute . After graduation, he first worked as the director of the Akhtuba vegetable zone station (1933-1934), then as the director of the Gribovsky vegetable selection and experimental station (1934-1936). In 1936, N.I. Vavilov was invited to graduate school at VIR , which he graduated in 1939. From 1937 to 1941 he was the head of the department of vegetable crops at the All-Russian Research Institute of Plant Industry (VIR). He participated in the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945). In 1950-1952, the secretary of the Leningrad regional committee of the CPSU (b), in 1952-1954 he was the head of the vegetable crops department of the All-Russian Research Institute of Plant Production, in 1954-1956 he was the second secretary of the Leningrad Regional Committee of the CPSU, in 1956-1961 he was the first vice-president of VASKHNIL and the editor-in-chief of the journal "Bulletin of Agricultural Science", in 1961-1965 he was the head of the department of vegetable crops at the All-Russian Research Institute of Plant Production.
From 1966 to 1978 he was director of the VIR Institute named after N. I. Vavilov, at the same time in 1968-1973 he was the first vice-president of VASKHNIL, and in 1970-1982 he was the editor-in-chief of the journal Vestnik of Agricultural Science.
In VIR he studied vegetable crops, in particular, tomatoes . In this culture, he conducted fundamental research, the results of which are summarized in a large number of printed works. The scientist introduced a lot of new things into the knowledge of genetics, developmental biology and systematics of tomatoes. Under his leadership, valuable varieties of this crop were created, a system for seed production of greenhouse tomatoes, cucumbers and other vegetables was developed. With his direct participation, new breeding trends were developed: distant hybridization , experimental mutagenesis , the use of heterosis to increase crop yields and plant resistance to adverse factors. Published over 450 scientific papers, of which about 20 books of brochures. He has 12 patents for varieties and hybrids of tomatoes.
Editor- in -chief of the journals “Bulletin of Agricultural Science” and “Transactions in Applied Botany, Genetics and Breeding”.
He died on April 4, 1982 . He was buried in Moscow at the Kuntsevsky cemetery .
