History
The United States joined FIBA ββin 1934 and was represented in the association by an organization called the Amateur Sports Union . In 1974 , after merging with a number of other American organizations, the association was named the United States Amateur Basketball Federation (ABAUSA). On October 12, 1989, it was renamed the USA Basketball ( USA USA ), still being the United States National Basketball Federation.
The US men's national basketball team is the most titled team in the world men's basketball, winning medals at all the Olympic Games in which it participated, including 13 times becoming the Olympic champion.
The US Women's National Basketball Team is a six- time Olympic champion and an eight-time world champion .
Olympic teams
The federation has always played a major role in deciding how to equip the national team to participate in the Olympic basketball tournament. Before the 1988 Seoul Olympics , the national teams were exclusively staffed by college players (nonprofessionals). Since 1992, the US Basketball Federation began to attract professional players to the team, mainly among the best athletes of the National Basketball Association . The first team formed of professionals was named Dream Team . At present, the Federation selects the best players for the NBA season, by voting a special commission consisting of 9 people (7 representatives of the NBA and 2 representatives of the Federation).
