Stage Overview
On the warm-up lap of the Ayrton Senna car, the gear selector broke and he completed the lap in first gear. The first start was canceled, and Senna started on a spare car from the boxes.
Alain Prost was in the lead during the second start, Mansell was in second place when, on lap 19, the temperature sensor showed that his car was overheated. Nigel drove into the pits to check, stalled and left. Gerhard Berger came in second. Senna broke through the entire peloton - after the first lap he was in 21st place, after the fourth - at 15th, after the tenth - at 8th, entered the points zone at 13th lap, and at the 20th lap he was completely in second place.
Prost drove into the pit lane and retained the lead, Senna did the same all around later, but stalled and rolled back to sixth place. Almost immediately, the Brazilian was shown a black flag and was disqualified for changing the car after a warm-up lap. Prost easily brought matters to victory, Berger, although he reduced the gap to 10 seconds, finished second.
Nelson Piquet came third in his home race, ahead of Derek Warwick on Arrows , Michele Alboreto on Ferrari and Satoru Nakajima on another Lotus .

- Alex Cuffy used a modified Formula 3000 chassis, as the Formula 1 chassis was not ready. As a result, this grand prix was the last to be announced for the participant who used the legendary Ford-Cosworth DFV engine - almost 21 years after its debut.
