Description

Length up to 40 cm, weight up to 680 g (modal 240-350 g). Spawning occurs in Antarctic autumn (March – April). The objects of nutrition are amphipods , juvenile fish, euphausiids [3] [6] , including Antarctic krill ( Euphausia superba , Euphausia crystallorophias , Pleuragramma antarcticum ). Using underwater video surveillance in the Weddell Sea , it was found that males guard egg-laying areas by patrolling them [7] .

The species was first described in 1914 by Charles Tate Regan on the materials of the polar explorer-zoologist Edward Adrian Wilson , a member of the expedition of the British Antarctic expedition of 1910-1913 on the barge " Terra Nova ", led by Robert Scott [1] .
