Born in a peasant family, since childhood she sang in a church choir. In 1941-46 studied at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm . In 1946 she made her debut at the Royal Opera in Stockholm in the part of Agatha in Weber’s opera “The Free Shooter” . In 1948 she performed in Germany and Italy. But Stockholm remained its main platform until 1951, where she performed already very diverse parts for the beginning singer: Donna Anna (in “ Don Giovanni ” by Mozart), Lady Macbeth and Aida (Verdi), Lisa (in “The Queen of Spades ” by Tchaikovsky), Tosca (Puccini), Sent and Siglinda (in Wagner's The Flying Dutchman and Valkyrie ). In 1951, she was successful at the Glyndebourne festival in the part of Electra in Mozart's Idomen .

Soon, the singer turned to Wagnerian roles. In 1953, she performed the parts of Elizabeth in “Tannhäuser” and Isolde in “Tristan and Isolde” in Stockholm, and in 1954–55. with great success acted as Brünnhilde in the "Ring of the Nibelung" in Munich . Since 1954 she performed at the Vienna State Opera, in 1954-67. participated in the Bayreuth festival .

However, her repertoire included not only Wagner parties. With no less success, she performed in operas by Richard Strauss ( Salome and Electra in the operas of the same name, the dyer’s wife in The Woman Without a Shadow ) and Giuseppe Verdi (Aida in the opera of the same name , Lady Macbeth in Macbeth , etc.). Her greatest achievements include the title part in Puccini 's opera Turandot , first sung by her in 1958 at the opening of the season in La Scala and then performed with unchanging triumph throughout the world and recorded many times with various partners and conductors.

Birgit Nilsson performed in the USA (since 1956), London (since 1957), Moscow (1964), Osaka (1967), Paris (1968), Buenos Aires (1971, 1979) .) etc.

The singer performed not only in opera, but also (less often) in concerts, where she performed songs and romances (in Swedish) by J. Sibelius and V. Stenhammar . Birgit Nilsson recorded all her main roles, as well as about a dozen solo concerts of arias, art songs, concerts and hymns - all of them were originally released in vinyl format and most were reissued on CD or in digital format.

In 1978, she undertook a large concert tour, mainly with a song program. She completed public appearances in 1984, after which she returned to her native province in southern Sweden, where she lived for another twenty years, working mainly with her family (her only happy marriage lasted 57 years) and with the affairs of the local community, in particular, organizing concerts of famous Swedish opera singers in your hometown. In 1996, at the James Levine Jubilee Evening at the Metropolitan Opera, the singer again demonstrated the strength and purity of her voice by singing the famous Wagnerian "Hojotoho" (Cry of Brungilda from the opera Valkyrie ).
