History
According to the chronicle data in the XI - XII centuries in the basin of Protva , in the territory where Obolensk was located, lived Golad .
Around 1270 - 1494 , was the center of the Obolensky principality , which was part of the so-called Verkhovsky principalities [1] . The Obolensky princedom is known from the 13th century , as part of the inheritance of Yuri Mikhailovich, Prince of Tarusa and Obolensky, the fifth son of Mikhail of Chernigov . The first mention in the chronicle of the city itself refers to the year 1369 , in connection with the capture of it by Lithuanians marching to Moscow. During the first campaign of Olgerd to Moscow, when Lithuanian troops passed through the Odoevsky and Obolensky Princedoms, Prince Konstantin Ivanovich Obolensky was killed [2] . In 1380, the brothers Semyon Konstantinovich and Ivan Konstantinovich as commander Dmitry Donskoy participated in the Battle of Kulikovo . Semyon Konstantinovich commanded the Watchdog Regiment [3] .
Obolensk joined to Moscow in 1494 . Obolensky princes cease to be the rulers of the principality, but continue to serve the Moscow ruler. In 1565 , after Tsar Ivan the Terrible divided the Russian state into oprichnina and the Zemstvo , the city became part of the latter [4] [5] .
Obolensk eventually becomes the county town. According to the census data of 1678, in the Obolensky district, there were 78 villages with 3929 inhabitants in the estates, 35 villages with 1826 inhabitants in the feudal lords, and 1546 people lived in the villages of the clergy in 27 villages. Total in 146 villages of the county was 6501 people.
Obolensk was abolished as a city during the reign of Catherine II . At the beginning of the 19th century, Obolensk is known as βa former suburb belonging to the city of Serpukhovβ; by 1805, it was a settlement in the Tarusa district of the Kaluga province at the Protva river 20 versts from the confluence of the Oka . In the late XIX - early XX, it is referred to as "the village of Obolenskoye , Kaluga Province, Tarusa County, 27 versts from the county town, on the Protva River."
Currently, the village of Obolenskoye, Zhukovsky district, Kaluga region, is located on the site of the old Russian city.
