1955 USSR Championship
Main article: USSR Football Championship 1955 (class "A")
The failure in the 1954 season led to the resignation of the head coach, instead of Sokolov, Nikolay Gulyaev joined the team . In addition, 15 years later, Nikolai Starostin returned to Spartak , taking the position of team leader. Before the start of the season, the squad was strengthened, the team came to attack Mikulets , the attackers Korshunov and Kegeyan . Also from Moscow “Dynamo”, the veteran Salnikov returned to the team , but the leadership of the blue and white darkened Sergei’s return to the red-and-whites , the football player was deprived of the title “Honored Master of Sports”. The beginning of the season turned out to be unsuccessful for the Muscovites, after five matches only one victory was gained, in addition to this, the leading striker Simonyan was injured. However, soon the team began to improve the game. In a magnificent match, the principal rival and competitor in the fight for gold was Dynamo Moscow (4: 1). By the middle of the season , Spartak lagged behind the leader of Dynamo Moscow by only one point. However, the defeat at the finish line from the Moscow Torpedo "put an end" on the champion ambitions of red and white . As a result, the team won the second place in the championship for the second time in a row.
