History
On May 18, 1839, Pope Gregory XVI issued the Ex munere pastoralis breva , which was established by the Apostolic Vicariate of Arabia and Egypt, selecting it from the Apostolic Vicariate of Syria, Egypt, Arabia and Cyprus (today the Apostolic Vicariate of Aleppo ) and the sui iuris mission of Lower Egypt. to the Custody of the Holy Land ). The pastoral care of the apostolic vicariate was entrusted to the monks of the Franciscan monastic order . Initially, the apostolic vicariate of Arabia and Egypt extended its jurisdiction not only to the believers of the Latin rite, but also to the communities of the Catholic Coptic rite and the Armenian rite , which at that time were small in number, unorganized and did not have their own hierarchy.
On April 3, 1846, the apostolic vicariate of Arabia and Egypt transferred part of his territory to the apostolic vicariate of Central Africa (today the Archdiocese of Khartoum ). In 1851, the apostolic vicariate, the apostolic vicariate of Arabia and Egypt, was renamed the apostolic vicariate of Egypt.
In 1885, Pope Leo XIII established the Alexandrian Diocese of the Armenian Catholic Church and the believers of this community left the jurisdiction of the Apostolic Vicariate of Egypt. On January 25, 1886 and on September 13, 1894, the Apostolic Vicariate of Egypt transferred part of its territory to build the New Apostolic Prefecture of the Nile Delta (the abolished Apostolic Vicariate of Heliopolis of Egypt ) and Eritrea (the abolished Apostolic Vicariate of Asmara ).
On November 26, 1895, Pope Leo XIII issued the breve Christi Domini , by which he established the Patriarch of Alexandria of the Coptic and the faithful of the Coptic rite came out of the jurisdiction of the apostolic vicariate of Egypt.
On July 12, 1926, the Apostolic Vicariate of Egypt transferred part of its territory for the construction of a new Apostolic Vicariate of the Suez Canal (the abolished Apostolic Vicariate of Port Said ).
On January 27, 1951, the Congregation for the Affairs of the Eastern Churches issued the decree of Nuper Apostolicae Sedi , which renamed the Apostolic Vicariate of Egypt to the Apostolic Vicariate of Alexandria of Egypt.
On November 30, 1987, the Congregation for the Affairs of the Eastern Churches issued the decree Cum olim , which abolished the apostolic vicariate of Heliopolis of Egypt and Asmara, and attached their territory to the apostolic vicariate of Alexandria of Egypt.
