Geography
The island is about 6 by 3 km in size, the distance to the mainland is about 250 meters.
The island is home to many polar bears [2] . Since 1980, it has been part of the National Arctic Reserve .
History
The island was discovered on August 4, 1826 [3] .
Until the end of the 19th century, it was the center of exchange trade between Inupiat and Inuit , which is why it got its name [1] .
Infrastructure
The only [4] city on the island is Kaktovik , which was formed as a result of the construction of the Dew Line radar station in 1954 [5] .
On the island (Kaktovik city) there is one school in which 57 pupils are studying (as of 2012) [1] .
On March 2, 1970, three Nike Tomahawk meteorological rockets were launched from the island.
In the north-eastern part of the island is the airport of the same name .
