After the collapse of the cartel with AMO ZIL in the late 1990s, the Gorky Automobile Plant preoccupied itself with creating a marketable low-bed delivery medium-tonnage car for transportation on roads of improved categories. The first samples were created jointly with the Minsk Automobile Plant, but later on, Minskers unilaterally refused to supply their cabs of the MAZ-5336 type to GAZ and launched the production of the 5-ton low-loader MAZ-4370 family of low-loader trucks, which later was popularly known as Zubrenok. The basis was taken by the German MAN L 2000 , the first MAZ-4370 left the factory gate in the summer of 1999. On the basis of the MAZ-4370 machine, a 4.5-ton MAZ-4371 truck was created, which is also popularly called the "Zubrenok".
