Buonarroti family home in Florence
Michelangelo was born in the town of Caprese, in the province of Arezzo , and was transported to Florence as a child. Growing up, he did not live here permanently, but from time to time he returned. Since the father’s income was not large, children were brought to work early - most sons were involved in the production of silk cloth, which was famous for Florence. Michelangelo worked first in the studio of artists Domenico and David Ghirlandaio , and a year later, in the spring of 1489, he moved to the art school in the Boboli gardens , where he began to work in sculpture.
Over time, the family acquired three neighboring sites in the city, where only in 1546–1553 the estate was built (Michelangelo himself lived at that time in Rome). After the sculptor’s death, his body was transported to Florence, as the family wanted to bury him at home. The burial took place in the Church of the Holy Cross . Under the will of Michelangelo, the house went to his nephew, Leonardo Bunarroti.
In 1612 the building received its modern look. Its last owner in the 19th century was Cosimo, who, according to his will, transferred this house to the municipality of Florence. From 1859 , a year after Cosimo’s death, a museum was established here.
Museum
Despite the memorial orientation of the museum, there are few works of Michelangelo himself, who became famous during his lifetime. The old library collection includes a family archive, more than 200 drawings by the artist and his letters. Among the exhibits of Casa-Buonarroti are sculptural models and early bas-reliefs by Michelangelo - “ Madonna by the Ladder ” and “ The Battle of the Centaurs ”. The museum also houses a sculptural portrait of Michelangelo by Daniele da Volterra , whom Buonarroti helped to create compositions for his works. The exhibition is supplemented by an exhibition of archaeological finds related to the history of Tuscany .
