Description
Fore wing length 19-23 mm. Wingspan 35–55 mm. Expressed sexual dimorphism . The front wings of the male are grayish-brown in color with a clearly visible golden yellow spot at the base. The female is much larger than the male. the color of its wings is bright golden yellow. On its front wings, there are two black and blue spots. The hind wings are light yellow. The breasts of males and females are yellow-golden. Abdomen grayish, with yellow hairs [1] .
Range
Southern, Eastern and Central Europe , Sweden , the Baltic states , the middle and southern bands of the European part of Russia, the Caucasus , Transcaucasia , the east of Transbaikalia , the Far East : Amur Region , Primorye , Northeast China , Korea , Japan .
Biology
Butterflies are found in mixed and spruce forests, sometimes along the outskirts of sphagnum bogs , as well as in gardens and parks. Butterflies fly from the beginning of July to the end of August.
Life Cycle
The caterpillar is gray-brown or blackish. Her body with a wide yellow dorsal stripe with thin longitudinal lines, is covered with black-gray hairs and red warts. Caterpillars develop from September to June next year, winter. They feed on lichens growing on the trunks and branches of trees [1] , most often - oaks .

It is listed in the Red Book of the Moscow Region (3rd category. Rare species.)
