Description
Medium-sized ants, roughly sculpted (furrowed), black. The length of the working individuals is from 5.0 to 12.6 mm. Antennae 12-segmented. The eyes are small, shifted laterally to the dorsal surface of the head. Mesopleuron is divided by a transverse groove. Mandibles subtriangular, bear up to 10 cloves on the chewing margin. Propodeum without spines or teeth. The stalk between the breast and the abdomen consists of one nodular segment of the petiol . Abdomen with a strong constriction between the 1st (A3) and 2nd (A4) segments. Cryptobiont predators [1] [2] .

Systematics
About 30 species that were previously included in the genus Pachycondyla . The genus was first identified in 1867 by the Austrian entomologist Gustav Mayr . In 1981, the genus Ectomomyrmex was synonymous with the genus Pachycondyla by the American hymenopterologist Roy Snelling (Snelling, RR 1981: 389) and in the same status it was considered by Bert Halldobler and Edward Wilson (Hölldobler & Wilson, 1990: 11), William Barry and William Brown, in Bolton, 1994: 164). It was restored in generic status in 2014 by the worldmecologists Chris Schmidt and Steve Shattack, who conducted a molecular genetic phylogenetic analysis of the ponerina subfamily. They included the genus Ectomomyrmex in the genus Ponera genus group ( Ponerini ) along with the genera Austroponera , Cryptopone , Diacamma , Emeryopone , Iroponera , Parvaponera , Ponera , Pseudoponera and Rasopone .
