Andex Abbey

The monastery, towering above the village, was built on the site of the Middle-Andex castle, which was once the residence of an ancient and powerful Bavarian sovereign family . Even in the Early Middle Ages, the Counts of Dyssen owned vast lands on Eche and Inn. In 1204 they received the duchy of Meran , but already 1248 their family died out in the male generation, and their vast inheritance for the most part passed into the hands of the counts of Tyrol . From the penultimate generation of the Counts of Dissen-Andex came three crowned sisters - Agnes of France , Gertrude of Hungary and Gedwig of Poland .

Since at least 1138 it has been known that Andex was famous as a place of worship. The influx of pilgrims intensified after 1338, when it was announced the discovery of the relics of saints, allegedly brought here from Palestine and Rome by the dissident Count Rasso at the beginning of the X century. In 1423, the Bavarian Duke Ernst built a pilgrimage church on the site of the long-destroyed castle, which in 1455 was transformed into a Benedictine monastery, which after 3 years received all the rights of the abbey. Then the brethren from the abolished imperial abbey of Tegernsee were transferred here.

The monastery complex got its present look in the style of the Bavarian Rococo at the beginning of the 18th century, when it was reconstructed under the direction of J. B. Zimmermann . With the general secularization of Napoleonic time (1803), the monastery was abolished, but already in 1850, the Bavarian king Ludwig I bought Andex and restored the monastery as a courtyard of the Munich Abbey of St. Boniface . Some of the members of the Bavarian royal house , as well as composer Karl Orff, are buried in the monastery crypt.
