Career

Newman was born near Portsmouth , England . He began his career with Woking from the country's lower leagues, then after 1955 he played in more titled clubs: Portsmouth , Leighton Orient , Crystal Palace and Gillingham [2] . In 1967, Newman arrived in the United States , where he played for the Atlanta Chiefs in the National Professional Football League (where he was recognized as the MVP team in 1967). During the 1968 season, the English player moved to the Dallas Tornado . Not limited to player functions, Newman also served as an assistant coach during the 1968 season.

In 1969, Newman became the head coach, but despite this, he continued his career as a player until 1974. At the end of the 1974 season, he left football and became the team’s sole head coach for the 1975 season. He won the NASL Championship in 1971 with the Tornado. In 1976, he coached the Los Angeles Skyhawks of the American Football League (ASL) and won the ASL Championship with them. This made Newman the only trainer to win both NASL and ASL. Then he returned to NASL in 1977 and began to train the Fort Lauderdale Strikers [3] , he remained with the team until 1979. That season, he was forced to put on a player’s uniform and play one match, as many players were in the infirmary.

In July 1980, Newman became a San Diego Sokkers coach. At that time he had the best statistics among coaches, he was named the NASL coach of the year in 1971, 1977 and 1984 [4] , as well as the ASL coach of the year in 1976. In addition, he left his mark in a show ball with San Diego, with which he won 10 championships in 11 seasons in two different leagues (NASL and MISL), and only lost in the semi-finals in 1986-1987, Tacoma Stars violated Newman’s hegemony. The innovations of the English coach in the showball included the addition of new positions and tactics, for example, the sixth attacking and super-powerful game.

Ron Newman became the first trainer hired by MLS: he began coaching Kansas City Wizards in 1995. Wizards won the Western Division in 1997. Newman retired in 1999 with record coaching statistics. It was inducted into the National Football Hall of Fame in 1992, and also immortalized on the Dallas Walk of Fame in 2006. Newman was also inducted into the San Diego Champions Hall [5] , as well as into the Atlanta Football Hall of Fame. The Englishman received the "key to the city" in Fort Lauderdale and twice in San Diego. The PASL Championship Trophy was named the Ron Newman Cup when the new San Diego Sokkers won it on January 7, 2012. [6]
