Career

Maria de Villota participated in several racing series, including the WTCC and ADAC Procar Series . On August 9, 2009, she signed with Atlético Madrid to participate in the Formula Super League until the end of the season. She continued to play for this team until 2011, when this championship ceased to exist. She also took part in the Daytona 24 Hours Endurance Race in 2005.

Formula 1

On August 18, 2011, the Lotus Renault GP team announced that de Villota made her debut behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car in a 2009 Renault R29 car on the Paul Ricard track, and that her manager is involved in negotiations with the team to secure her a place as a test pilot in the future.

On March 7, 2012, the Marussia F1 Team announced that de Villota became the team’s test pilot.

Daxford Incident Incident

On July 3, 2012, at about 9:30 a.m., de Villota had an accident at the Daxford airfield during a direct test for the Marussia team. Her racing car collided with a truck at the end of the line. Witnesses of the accident claim that the car was moving at a speed of 50-65 km / h. It was reported that some time after the incident, she regained consciousness, and an hour later the racer managed to be removed from the car, after which she was taken to the Addensbrook hospital in Cambridgeshire with severe head and face injuries.

As it was established during the investigation conducted by the Labor Inspectorate, before the start of the tests, de Villota complained that she could not control the clutch when turning the steering wheel to the maximum angle, and before the race she was not instructed on how to stop the car, since the team "relied on the experience and skills of a racer." During the tests, a standard trailer was used, the hydraulic lift of which was larger than that of the motor-trailer used during races. When, after completing the tests, de Villota drove up to the boxes at a speed of 45 km / h and began to slow down, a system worked that prevented the engine speed from falling below 4100 rpm, as a result of which it was impossible to turn off the clutch or switch to first gear. An attempt to brake led to the blocking of the front wheels and the loss of control. The car crashed into the trailer hydraulic lift, which was at the eye level of the racer. [four]

The next day, team leader John Booth said that de Villota lost her right eye and is in critical condition [5] . Then her condition began to improve, and on July 8 she regained consciousness and was able to communicate with relatives [6] . On July 20, de Villota was transferred to La Paz Hospital in Madrid [7] , from which she was discharged on July 26 to undergo rehabilitation [8] .

In October, she appeared at a press conference on her recovery. The Spaniard came out in a blindfold covering her lost eye, and with a short hairstyle on her operated head. [9] .

Death

On October 11, 2013, Maria de Villota was found dead in a hotel room in Seville, where she planned to present her autobiography, “Life is a Gift” [10] . According to the forensic medical examination, the cause of death was a cerebral hemorrhage due to a previously suffered open traumatic brain injury [11] [12] .
