History

According to legend, two Monskie princes from the state of Taton founded the city of Pegu in 573 . They saw a goose on an island in a large lake, which stood on the back of a goose, which was recognized as a favorable omen. Following the sign, they founded a city called Hanthavadi ( Pali : Hamsavadi). Previously, the city stood at sea and was a seaport.

The earliest mention is in the writings of the Arab geographer Ibn-Hudadbin around 850. At this time, the capital of mones moved to Taton. This area was occupied by the Burmese from Pagan in 1056 . After the Mongol invasion and the defeat of Pagan in 1287, the kingdom of Mon regained independence.

From 1369 to 1539, Khanthavadi was the capital of the monastic kingdom of Ramanades , occupying the whole of Lower Burma. The area in 1539 was conquered by the king of Tabinshvetha of the state of Taungu .

In the kingdom of Taungu, Pegu became the capital in 1539 - 1599 , and then again in 1613 - 1634 , invasions of Siam took place through Pegu. Europeans often visited the port of Pegu, and in European sources note the power and grandeur of the city. In 1634, the city of Ava became the capital. In 1740, the mones revolted. Until 1757, they maintained independence, but the king of Alaungpaya defeated the mones and completely destroyed the city.

King Bodopaya ( 1782 - 1819 ) rebuilt the city, but the river changed course, and the city was cut off from the sea, losing its commercial significance.

In 1852, the British annexed Pegu (See Second Anglo-Burmese War ). In 1862 , the province of British Burma was formed with its capital in Rangoon .
