History
The predecessor of Shiraz University - a technical college called the Higher Institute of Health for the training of medical specialists for a 4-year program - was established in 1946 . In 1950, it was transformed into a medical institute. In 1953, the School of Nursing and the College of Agriculture, Arts and Sciences of Namazi were founded.
After joining the complex in 1954, the College of Engineering Sciences and the College of Veterinary Medicine, he was given university status. In honor of the ruling dynasty, he received the name Pahlavi University . In the pre-revolutionary period, the university also included a dental school (1969), a postgraduate school and a college of electronics (1969), a college of law and pedagogy (1977).
In 1960, Iranian Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi invited the president of the University of Pennsylvania, Gaylord Harnwell, to Iran to study Iranian higher education institutions . At the request of the Shah, Harnwell prepared a report, following which the Shah invited the University of Pennsylvania to help transform Pahlavi University into the only university in the Middle East based on the American system of higher education. [4] Thus, the University of Pennsylvania played a decisive role in shaping the structure and program of many faculties and institutes at Pahlavi University. Many University of Pennsylvania faculty members went to Shiraz to teach or supervise academic or research work. The President of the University of Pennsylvania was awarded an honorary degree from Pahlavi University in recognition of his merits in its formation. [five]
After the 1979 Islamic Revolution , which overthrew the Pahlavi dynasty, the Iranian Cultural Revolution ( en: Iran's Cultural Revolution of 1980-1987 ) began in 1980-1987, aimed at the Islamization of education and culture. In its course, all universities in Iran were closed for 3 years.
At present, Shiraz University enjoys a reputation as a very strong university in Iran, surpassing even Sharif University of Technology and Tehran University in academic terms.
Teaching Language
Although Persian is the official and main language of instruction at Shiraz University, a large number of lectures, textbooks, homework, and even exams are conducted in English ; this is especially true for an engineering school, where textbooks on basic subjects (electrical, electronics, computer science, mechanics, construction, materials science and chemical engineering) are in English.
Also, a virtual university was created at Shiraz University, the first among virtual universities in Iran.
