Biography
Jan van Brackel was born at the beginning of the 17th century; the exact date of birth is unknown, presumably 1638. In 1640 he entered the service in the fleet.
In 1657 he took part in an expedition to the Mediterranean Sea against the Berber pirates, under the command of de Ruyter , and in all his voyages and campaigns. In 1665, during the second Anglo-Dutch war , already commanding the Swan frigate, Brackel was overtaken by the British flotilla and, after a desperate battle at Dogger Bank (the western part of the North Sea), burned its ship and escaped with the crew on boats.
In the battle of Dunkirk in 1666, commanding the Lammerty Quick firewall, he did much damage to the British. The following year, he participated in a raid by Admiral de Ruyter on the Thames estuary, commanding the frigate Mir. Despite de Ruyter’s ban, Brackel, having destroyed chain barriers on the Thames, climbed up the river and captured the 44-gun frigate Jonathan, for which he was awarded a gold chain around his neck.
In the battle of Solebey in 1672, as part of the squadron of Admiral de Ruyter, Brackel seized on his ship "Caution" with a 100-gun ship Royal-James, under the flag of Admiral Montague , and brought him into such a state that the admiral was forced with people leave the sinking ship, but Brakel’s ship also had to be towed beyond the line of combatants.
The last trip of Brakel was a successful expedition to the Mediterranean Sea to destroy the pirates, for which Brakel was promoted to shabutenakhty (rear admiral).
On July 10, 1690, Brakel was killed at the Battle of Heady .
