Lingualeo

Lingualeo is an educational platform for the study and practice of a foreign language [3] , built on game mechanics [4] . Initially, the Russian-language service is localized for the Turkish [5] and Brazilian [6] markets, later for the Spanish-speaking market for aircraft and Spain. As of December 2015, Lingualeo has more than 13 million registered users [7] [8] , of which 9 million are in the CIS countries [9] . By January 2018, the total number of users has grown to 17.5 million [10] .

The name of the company is formed on behalf of its mascot and game character - the lion cub Leo .

Teaching Methods

Lingualeo calls his approach "the seven secrets of learning a foreign language." This is an understanding of the purpose of learning , the pleasure of regular classes , working with a live language , imitation of native speakers and bringing skills to automatism through the use of visual, auditory and motor memory [13] .

The user begins by passing a language proficiency test and fills out a list of his interests. Based on them, Lingualeo draws up a personal training plan, the implementation of which in different categories of skills - from perceiving speech to growing vocabulary and the number of grammatical errors - the user sees in his personal account [9] .

Lingualeo offers to learn the language on materials interesting to the user : audio books and songs , videos or texts posted in open sources or downloaded by other participants [14] . Among the sources of the original text and audio are presentations at TED conferences [15] and courses on the educational site Coursera [16] , thematic lessons published in the Evernote- notebook [17] .

An alternative is closed courses [18] [19] . In Lingualeo there are training programs for the exam [20] and TOEFL [21] . Lingualeo gives you the opportunity to create your own courses and share them with other participants.

In the process, the user can independently choose unfamiliar words for exercises or use thematic collections. Grammar and pronunciation training, games, a personal dictionary with associations, and a journal that records learning progress are available [22] . The mobile application for the iOS platform also has training aimed at improving the speed of reading and reading comprehension [23] .

Game Model

In training the user accompanies Lion Cub Leo , the mascot of Lingualeo . For useful actions, training, activity and a paid subscription, the user receives game currency - meatballs , which Leo eats for adding new words and phrases to his personal dictionary. Eating regularly, Leo raises his level and makes new exercises available. A paid subscription provides an endless supply of meatballs [24] .

Lingualeo works according to the freemium model : a part of training is available in the free version, the replenishment of a personal dictionary is limited [25] . According to the company itself, about 4% of users acquire access to advanced services from Lingualeo (Golden Status costs 1990 rubles per year, thematic courses - from 190 to 1500 rubles [26] ). According to experts, attracted by RBC, the revenue of LinguaLeo for 2013 was about $ 5 million [9] .

Since 2015, Lingualeo launched a service in Spanish-speaking countries, investing a total of about $ 60 thousand in the translation and adaptation of materials. Due to the new market, the company expects to double its audience - up to 20 million users [9] .

History

Lingualeo is the second educational project of Ainur Abdulnasyrov [27] . He sold his share in the "Club of Native Speakers" , which helped students find teachers, for 7.5 million rubles in order to start work on the Lingualeo Internet service with the proceeds. The service was conceived as a set of interesting approaches to teaching English in a web application format [28] .

2009

In October 2009, Ainur brought a team of programmers to Koh Chang Island in Thailand for six months to immerse himself in work on the product, which later became a tradition [29] . The blog about development on a tropical island, which the team posted on the Habrahabr site, brought Lingualeo first fame and became a role model for a number of technology companies [30] [31] . There, on the island, the idea was born to use Leo and the Jungle raising the lion cub (content library) as a metaphor for a student lost in the jungle of new information [28] .

2010

The first version of Lingualeo , released in March 2010, was completely free for users . On April 1, 2010, the monetization of the service was launched, for a month the product earned about 15,000 rubles. The founder of the company expected revenue of at least 250,000 rubles so that this was enough to continue working on the service in Moscow. The maintenance of the team in Thailand was cheaper, but it was a temporary solution, for six months, as a result of a temporary disappointment in the capabilities of the project, it was frozen for six months [28] .

In November, Lingualeo was praised at the “Begin” working session in the “Strogino” technology park [32] , and at the Youth and Innovation Convention in Perm, Abdulnasyrov met with Sergey Kuznetsov and Yegor Rudi, the founders of the educational project Your Tutor, repetitors.info, (now the Eruditor Group ) who introduced him to their investor and business angel Igor Ryabenky. Lingualeo was valued at $ 1 million (at that time 30 million rubles) , attracted $ 200 thousand, in rubles, 6 million rubles by personal loans from Igor Ryabenky and got a place in the technopark [33] [34] [35] "Strogino". In the same month, the service was first nominated for the Runet Prize [36] .

2011

In 2011, Lingualeo began to grow, in May it got 8th place in the ranking of startup teams compiled by the recruiting agency Pruffi [37] . From December to July, the service audience increased from 60,000 users to 200,000, the number of sales of paid services increased 15 times. Lingualeo came to self-sufficiency [38] .

In July, Lingualeo took first place in the competition of business plans “Business of innovative technologies” [39] , and in December became the “best startup in the opinion of the audience” and won second place in the “Global Startup” nomination for the “Startup of the Year” award [40] . Lingualeo became "the best web application" according to the version of "Software of the Year 2011" from Mail.ru [41] .

In addition, in August 2011 Lingualeo received a grant for the development of an innovative project from the Department of Science, Industrial Policy and Entrepreneurship of Moscow in the amount of 4 million 200 thousand rubles [42] .

In February 2011, Dmitry Molchanov left the membership of the company. At the same time, it included three more persons: Igor Ryabenky, Sergey Kuznetsov, Yegor Rudi.

2012

In May 2012, Runa Capital Venture Fund [43] was included in the membership of the company. The company was valued at $ 10 million. [30]

In June, Lingualeo raised $ 3 million for a minority stake from the aforementioned fund. According to Abdulnasyrov , this decision was made jointly with the company’s investor Igor Ryabenky, the company has been choosing an investor with expertise in SaaS , information technology , e-commerce and education since 2010, and communicated with 10 other funds with Runa before signing the investment memorandum [44] . Runa Capital 's investments became the largest venture investment in an educational startup in 2012 [45] .

After receiving the investment, Lingualeo took the development team to the city of Sveti Stefan in Montenegro and, in two and a half months, released the Portuguese version of the service to enter the Brazilian market [46] .

In November, Lingualeo took third place at the Swiss-Russian Innovation Prize - Prize Suvorova [Comment 1] [47] , received the “Clouds 2012” award [41] , and in December was named one of the five most promising Russian startups according to the Russian Startup Rating 2012 prepared with the participation of PricewaterhouseCoopers , Digital October and Russia Beyond the Headlines [48] .

In the same year Nikolay Shakhmatov, Anna Bykovskaya, Alexey Odin joined the company.

In 2012, the service’s revenue grew 7 times, and Ainur Abdulnasyrov , according to him, retained a controlling stake . The number of users has reached 3 million, including 100,000 in Brazil [49] [50] .

2013

In 2013, Lingualeo entered the Kommersant TOP Mobile Apps Pack rating [51] , received third place in the overall rating and first in the Consumer Services rating as part of the startup research conducted by Kommersant [52] , and became the Made in Russia nominee . in the Entrepreneurship category [53] and the Runet Prize in the Technology and Innovation category [54] , received the Clouds for Users award based on the results of the popular vote at the Clouds 2013 contest [55] .

According to Wired Lingualeo, it took 7th place in the list of the “hottest” Russian startups [56] , and awarded the service first place in the Russian Startup Award 2013 [57] .

At the beginning of 2014, the creator of the service, Ainur Abdulnasyrov, occupied 81st place in the rating of Russian Internet millionaires according to the "Firm Secret" [58] .

In May, the company announced a partnership with Evernote [17] , in July - with the American foundation TED [59] . The result was a notepad with the rules of grammar and vocabulary of the English language and a video player with an interactive interface that allows you to learn English from the speeches of experts [60] .

In June, Lingualeo announced a launch in Turkey [61] .

During the year, mobile applications for all platforms were updated: on the iOS version there was an opportunity to watch TED Talks in an interactive player [60] , on “ Android devices ” Brainstorm training was added [60] , applications for Windows Phone received a test for language skills and recommendations for further courses [62] . Last Microsoft called the "application of the year" [63] . The developers again left for a month in Thailand to develop personalization of the platform [29] .

Over the course of the year, the Lingualeo team was taken away by managers who came from large companies: former Evernote top manager Dmitry Stavisky took over as the operational director [64] , and later CEO [65] , the former director of development at Rambler & Co holding Irina Shashkina became managing director in Russia and the CIS [66] , Olga Pushkina , who led the marketing and operations team at Samsung , was appointed Head of International [67] , a former head of mobile Yandex. Kart Artem Loginov was elected vice president of product [68] . Dmitry Stavisky was building up a team in order to attract another round of financing.

In the fall, Lingualeo released a TOEFL training program [21] . By the end of October, the number of users reached 10 million [2] .

At the end of December, a revised system with personal training plans was introduced, in the creation of which the company invested $ 1.5 million [9] .

At this time, Altair.VC Limited begins to participate in the company.

2015

In April, the company provided its product for B2B sales. Corporate customers can teach their staff English in individual programs that take into account the industry of the company, the position of employees and their language level, and monitor the process with the help of a personal manager [69] .

In May, it became known that the company is reducing its staff by 30%, and the rest of the staff will be cut salaries. The stated goal is to avoid a cash gap, since during the crisis Dmitry Stavisky was unable to attract another round of financing from interested investors, and the costs of maintaining the team were already increased. At the same time, at the beginning of the year, the company was actively increasing expenses, planning expansion into new markets under the leadership of CEO Dmitry Stavisky [70] . However, in the same May, the company managed to raise $ 500,000 from Social Discovery Ventures (SD Ventures) and Runa Capital [8] .

Lingualeo entered the June selection of Google Play "Best of Russia" [71] .

In July, the company reported that a system of personal recommendations based on user data appeared in applications for mobile devices based on iOS and Android [72] . The section of achievement statistics on the site has been updated ( "My progress" ). It demonstrates how the user develops individual language skills [73] .

In August, Pavel Gushchin , ex-head of People’s Yandex.Maps , [74] [75] [76] joined the Lingualeo team as vice president of development.

In December, Google published a list of “Best Apps of 2015” for Android, which included the Lingualeo app in the “Made in Russia” category [77] .

According to the results of 2015, the company announced its self-sufficiency in July 2015, and showed a growth in turnover of 7% compared to 2014 [78] .

2016

In January, Lingualeo launched the Leo Marathon , aimed at exploring learning motivation. The project participants engaged in the service for 4 weeks in the format of the competition [79] [80] . According to company representatives, the language skills metrics of these students increased by an average of 3.5 times. "Marathon runners" spent 3 times more time in mobile applications and 6 times more time on the Lingualeo website compared to active users of the service who did not participate in the action. The project involved 3 thousand people [81] .

In March, Dmitry Stavisky left the post of CEO, transferring his authority to Irina Shashkina [82] .

On April 25, the company announced a restart of the platform, announcing the fully automated formation of grammar skills and vocabulary. Grammar training was supplemented by 30 new rules, covering all the basic constructions of the English language, each of which accounts for 500 to 2000 examples. In the lexical training section, new ones appeared: “Savannah” (to increase the active vocabulary) and “Audio call” (to form the active listening skill) [83] . The concept of “Golden Status” has been abolished. It was replaced by Lingualeo Premium , which together with Lingualeo Basic introduced two ways to use the platform: paid and free, respectively. The premium version includes a third of training [84] .

In honor of the company's 6th anniversary in social networks, a competition for free tuition in the UK was held, the winner of which received two-week tuition at a language school in Manchester [85] [86] .

Lingualeo entered the June selection of Google Play "Best of Russia" [71] .

In June, the summer Leo Marathon was held, the service provided active participants with free access to premium features [87] [88] .

By the end of summer, Lingualeo’s app for iOS devices had grammar training [89] [90] .

2017

At the beginning of the year, a new section was launched in the Lingualeo mobile application on iOS aimed at developing fluent reading skills and reading comprehension [10] [23] . The set of exercises is suitable for students with any vocabulary base [91] .

In early May, Lingualeo announced its entry into the markets of Spain and Hispanic Latin America. [92]

In June, Lingualeo announced the launch of new hearing training (listening) for iOS mobile devices [93] .

On August 1, 2017, Vladimir Sirotinsky joined the Board of Directors of the company and was appointed Managing Partner [94] .

In November 2017, Lingualeo released grammar training on the Android platform for Russian-speaking, Turkish-speaking, Portuguese-speaking and Hispanic users [95] .

2018

At the beginning of the year, Lingualeo announced 2017 commercial results. The company first showed net profit [96] .

Bubbletone, a blockchain for telecom, and the online educational service Lingualeo have announced a strategic partnership whose goal is to develop access to online services based on a decentralized cryptographic platform [97] .

In March, Lingualeo released reading and hearing training for Android users across all locales [98] .

In August, the Lingualeo development team released an updated version of the site and mobile applications iOS and Android. The developers completely redesigned the logic of using the site, abandoned obsolete elements, introduced a new design.

Rych Dynasty Ltd. becomes a member of the company.

2019

May 17, Vladimir Sirotinsky was appointed CEO of the company.

Criticism

One of the main problems of Lingualeo is low engagement: only about 4% of users have paid accounts, and only about 10-30% buy Gold Status and other options again. According to experts, at the beginning of 2013 no more than 1% of users or about 100 thousand people used Lingualeo daily. This is due to the fact that most users quickly lose interest in self-education, despite gamification. Developers are trying to change the situation by introducing personal training plans [9] . According to the company itself, until July 2015, the service only doubled out on self-sufficiency [70] [78] .
