Zermatt ( German: Zermatt ) is a village and community (commune), one of the most famous resorts in Switzerland , in the south of the Valais canton, almost on the border with Italy .

Geography
Around the village there are most of the four thousandths of the Pennine Alps , such as the highest peak of Switzerland , the Dufour peak (4,634 m) in the Monte Rosa and Matterhorn massif (4,478 m), on the northern slope of which at an altitude of 1,608 meters is a village. Zermatt is connected to the ridge of the same name by the mountain railway Gornergrat , which rises almost a mile and a half.
Through the village flows the river Matterfisp (Ger . Matter Vispa ), feeding on the second-largest alpine glacier, Gorner .
From Zermatt to the Italian village of Breuil-Cervinia ( Valtournenche valley, Valle d'Aosta region ) leads the Teodul pass ( it. Theodulpass , Italian. Colle del Teodulo ).
Population and Tourism
The permanent population of this resort village is about 5.5 thousand people, the total population varies depending on the number of visiting tourists. Car traffic is prohibited and electric vehicles are used for movement. You can get to Zermatt by train from Brig ( German Brig ) or Täsch ( German Täsch ).
In 2016, a igloo- giant listed in the Guinness Book of Records was built here. The igloo should stand for 20 years, inside there are a bedroom, a bar, a restaurant and a spa [1] [2] .
