History
The square was designed according to the regular plan of 1778 and was named Semenovskaya Square according to the church of Simeon Stolpnik (Semenovskaya Church), located on the site of a modern "house with an arch." The temple was demolished in 1933 as “not fitting into the image of a new modern city”. In 1936, in its place, according to the project of architects M. P. Parusnikov and I. N. Sobolev, a “building with an arch” was erected. In 1939, a monument to V.I. Lenin (sculptor V.V. Kozlov , architect S.V. Kapachinsky) was erected in the park in front of the house with an arch.
The name Red Square was appropriated in December 1924 [1] due to the fact that the neighboring Streletskaya Street was renamed into Red Street in 1918. In addition, Semenovsky Descent was also renamed the Red Congress . As an option, the area in 1924 was planned to be called the area named after Karl Marx [1] .
