Biography
Born May 23 ( June 5 ), 1904 in the village. Kozlovka of the Smolensk district of the Smolensk province in a peasant family. Russian
In 1921 he graduated from the rabfak of the Smolensk Polytechnic Institute, and a year later - the first course of this institute. He lived in Leningrad. From October 1925 to May 1926, student of Leningrad State University Mikhail Ostrekin worked as a senior observer at the Slutsk (Pavlovsk) magnetic observatory.
In June 1926 he was enlisted by the Hydrographic Administration of the Navy in the state of the Polar Geophysical Observatory on Novaya Zemlya (Matochkin Shar station), where he worked as a geophysicist-magnetologist until October 1927. Returning from wintering, he continued his studies at the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Leningrad State University, which he graduated in March 1930.
From April 1930 to April 1931, M.E. Ostrekin was an employee of the State Hydrological Institute. As a producer of works and a chief of the hydrological survey unit, he conducted hydrological observations in Central Asia. In 1930, he took part in the General Magnetic Survey of the USSR , and in 1934-1938 he worked on expeditions of the Main Directorate of the Main Northern Sea Route.
Since 1939, M.E. Ostrekin is an employee of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute of the Main Glavsevmorput. In 1941, he participated in an outstanding air expedition on a plane “ USSR N-169 ” to the North Pole region, which was a completely unexplored part of the Central Arctic.
Since 1942, Ostrekin - the head of the department of geophysics, in 1946 he defended his thesis.
Ostrekin M. Ye. Was the scientific director of high-latitude air expeditions - “ Sever-2 ”, “ Sever-4 ”, “ Sever-5 ”, “ Sever-6 ”, “ Sever-7 ” and “ Sever-8 ”, the result of which there was a survey of the Arctic basin, including the North Pole, the Beaufort Sea, ocean areas near Alaska, Canada and Greenland, the discovery of the underwater Lomonosov Ridge and the Canadian-Taimyr magnetic anomaly.
Since 1959, Ostrekin participated in the research of the Antarctic and, as part of the 3rd Soviet Antarctic Expedition, became the head of the geophysical detachment, and then the head of the department of Antarctic research of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute of the Main Glavsevmorput.
He died on March 13, 1977 in Leningrad [1] .

Interesting fact.
April 23, 1948 Pavel Afanasevich Gordienko , Pavel Kononovich Senko , Mikhail Mikhailovich Somov and Mikhail Emelyanovich Ostrekin were delivered by plane to a point with coordinates 90 degrees north latitude. Then the same plane took them back already as the first people in the world with absolute certainty who visited this point of the North Pole [2] .
Awards and titles
- By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of December 6, 1949 (“closed”) for courage and heroism shown during the fulfillment of a special task of the government, Mikhail Emelyanovich Ostrekin was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal (No. 6626).
- He was awarded the Order of Lenin, two orders of the Red Banner of Labor, the Order of the Badge of Honor and medals.
- He was awarded the titles "Honorary Polar Explorer", "Excellent worker of the Hydrometeorological Service of the USSR."
