History
It was founded in 1953 during the reign of Juan Peron , as Astilleros y Fábricas Navales del Estado (AFNE) [4] , by combining the shipyard Astillero Río Santiago and the military plant Fábrica Naval de Explosivos Azul (FANAZUL). The company began production of both civilian and military ships and ships, including two tankers with a displacement of 60,000 tons. Argentinean and foreign companies such as ELMA , YPF , PDVSA and others became customers. In addition, AFNE produced diesel engines, cranes, components for locomotives (for Ferrocarriles Argentinos ) and hydraulic turbines, and industrial equipment (licensed from Sulzer , GTM , Fiat , Charmillier Atelier , Brisonneau et Lotz Marine , Cockerill-Ougree , Burmeister & Wain and Pielstick ) [5] . Major customers were the Navy and the country's coast guard . Warships were built, repaired and refitted. In the early 1970s, the company employed over 8,000 people, including contractors [5] .
In the 1990s, the economic crisis in Argentina also affected the ARS. Construction orders declined, and only in the mid-2000s did the situation improve slightly. In July 2012, the Eva Peron tanker, with a displacement of over 54,000 tons, was built for the Venezuelan company PDVSA, which is the largest ship built in Argentina over the past 30 years [6] . Also, PDVSA ordered ARS oil platforms.
Collaborates with companies from the CIS . So, in September 2010, between Astillero Río Santiago and the Ukrainian Black Sea Shipbuilding Plant , a preliminary agreement was signed on the design of a polar-class ship [7] [8] , since a similar ship, Baia Paraiso , crashed in the Antarctic in 1989 near the American Palmer station, and the only, at the moment, Argentine icebreaker Almirante Irisar is under repair, after a fire aboard it in 2007.

Current status
Astillero Río Santiago is the largest shipbuilding company in Latin America . It has all the necessary facilities for the construction and repair of surface ships of the main classes (including aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers, frigates) [3] and the assembly of ship power plants [2] . In 2007, the shipyard planned to begin construction of the lead one in a series of five multipurpose patrol ships of the OPV-80 type . Technological participation of the German company ThyssenKrupp was assumed [2] . Due to the financial difficulties of Argentina, the project, so far, remains unrealized.
In 2013, a network of financial fraud was discovered at Astillero Río Santiago. Several people from the city of Coronel Princes, located 500 kilometers from Ensenada, were listed as employees of the enterprise and received wages of tens of thousands of dollars. Among them were local government officials from the ruling Front for Victory Party Christina Kirchner [14] .
