It grows in Madagascar , as well as in South and Central Africa .
All species of this genus are aquatic, grow on rocks in fast-flowing water. They have roots with tubers , usually cirrus leaves and extremely reduced flowers .
The phylogenetic position of hydrostachis is very problematic. Due to its specialized structure associated with the aquatic lifestyle, it has always been combined with other aquatic plants, such as the Podostemaceae family ( lat. Podostemaceae ). However, structural features of the flower, the embryo, and other morphological features do not support this position of the genus, and molecular studies have shown that hydrostachis is a relative of plants of the order Kizilotsvetnye ( Latin Cornales ). Its position among cornelian is unclear; it can be a basal taxon of the entire order, or it can be part of the Hortense family ( lat. Hydrangeaceae ). With the rest of the cornel blossoms, it has a few common features. According to the APG III system (2009), it stands out in the independent Hydrostow family.
According to the database of The Plant List (as of July 2016), the genus includes 19 species [3] :
