The California rabbit [1] ( lat. Sylvilagus bachmani ) is a mammal from the hare family that lives along the Pacific coast of North America. A specific Latin name is given in honor of the American naturalist John Bachmann (1790-1874) [2] .

Content
DescriptionCalifornia rabbit up to 50 cm long and weighing less than 4 kg. The color of the top is brown to dark brown, the belly and underside of the tail are whitish. The tail, ears and legs are relatively short, the legs are short, slightly covered with hair [3] [4] .
DistributionThe species distribution area extends along the US Pacific coast from Columbia south through Oregon and California to the California Peninsula . The eastern border of the range reaches Sierra Nevada [5] .
The species inhabits landscapes densely overgrown with raspberry bush [3] .
NutritionCalifornia rabbits feed mainly on grass and other green parts of plants, as well as berries. In search of food they are able to climb [ style ] on small bushes and trees [3] .
ReproductionThe breeding season depends on the early or late seasons. In northern Oregon, it usually begins in February and ends in August; in California, it lasts from December to May or June. Litter averages between 2 and 8 cubs in Oregon and up to 4 in California. The gestation period lasts 27–32 days. For a year, the female makes about 5-6 litters, up to 8 rabbits in each. [3] [5] .
