The spirit of victory ( Italian: Genio della Vittoria ; also - Victory , Winner ) - a statue of Michelangelo , created between 1532-1534. This sculptural group depicts a young and tall young man towering above an old man. The young man’s left knee rests on the vanquished, and his right hand - as if rising for a blow. The statue is marked by unusual proportions - the head of the young man is small, which further emphasizes the length of his body, especially if you look at it from the bottom up [1] .

It is possible that initially this sculptural group was intended for the Tomb of Pope Julius II [2] , but it remained in the Florentine workshop of Michelangelo until his death. Daniele da Volterra wanted to install it on the grave of the artist [3] .
It is also unambiguously unknown whether the statue is completed, or refers to the technique of “non finito” [1] .
Romain Rolland wrote about the contents of the statue as follows:
| (...) the winner does not look at him, the winner hesitates; he turns away in indecision, he has a mournful mouth and an embarrassed look. A raised arm sank to his shoulder. He leaned back, he no longer wants victory, he despises it. He won. He is defeated. This image of heroic Doubt, this victory with broken wings (...) it is Michelangelo himself, a symbol of his whole life. [3] |
William Wallace also notes that researchers still can not decide from what angle this statue should be considered [1] . The same feature - the lack of a single angle - has his clay model Two fighters , or Hercules and Kakus [4] .
