Autumn day. Sokolniki

“Autumn day. Sokolniki ”is one of the few landscapes of Levitan , on which a human figure is present, and the figure of a woman walking through the park was written not by the artist himself, but by his friend in the School of Painting by the brother of the famous writer Nikolai Pavlovich Chekhov ^[1] . 1879 , while working on a painting, was one of the most difficult periods in the artist's life. After the decree prohibiting the stay of Jews in Moscow , a young, nineteen-year-old Levitan was evicted to Saltykovka, where the artist wrote nostalgic, sad landscapes ^[1] .

Fortunately, the picture of Levitan at the student exhibition was noticed and bought by the patron of the arts Pavel Tretyakov , which marked the beginning of the artist's recognition ^{[1] [2]} .

A. A. Fedorov-Davydov wrote about the picture:

Contrasting the enormity of sky space and the height of pines to a relatively small figure makes it so lonely in this desert park. The image is filled with dynamics: the path runs away into the distance, clouds are flying across the sky, the figure moves on us, the yellow leaves that have just been swept to the edges of the path seem rustling, and the disheveled tops of the pines are swinging in the sky. ^[3]

The painting depicts a deserted alley of the park in early autumn. Dark spots are seen evergreen pines, going up, the path is dotted with yellowed leaves. The picture is imbued with sadness and nostalgia, executed in a light etude manner, which is also largely due to the small size of the canvas ^[4] .
