Pelorus of the times of sailing ships
Pelorus ( Latin Pelorus , named after the helmsman killed by Hannibal ) is a tall column in the form of a metal pipe on which a repeater of the ship’s compass is mounted in a gimbal .
Pelorus allows you to make the device installed on it independent of changes in its position. In addition, in Pelorus, it is possible to preset various settings that automatically take into account navigation errors.
Pelorus or its analogue is a mandatory element of the navigation equipment of the vessel . It is installed on the open deck of sea and river vessels. It is usually located on the wings of the bridge and at the steering posts.
