Biography
Born in Paris on January 22, 1892 [4] to the Jewish family of Adolf and Noemi Bloch, he was the youngest of 4 children. Marcel's father was a doctor [5] . He graduated from the Condorcet High School, Breguet College and the Supaéro Graduate School of Aeronautics and Engineering. After graduating in 1913, he became an aeronautical engineer.
When the First World War began he was 22 years old. Considering his education, which is rare and important in the military sense, he was not sent to the front, but worked in the aviation research laboratory Chalet-Medon [6] , where he developed a new type of aviation propeller , and also participated in the creation of the two-seater sea fighter SEA IV [5 ] .
In 1919, he married Madeleine Minkes, the daughter of a wealthy Jewish furniture merchant, they had two sons - Claude and Serge . In 1930 he founded the company Société des Avions Marcel Bloch. His company was nationalized by the left government in 1936, but on December 12 of that year he created the Société anonyme des avions limited liability company Marcel Bloch (SAAMB) and remained the manager of the nationalized company [5] .
At the beginning of World War II he served in the army. Demobilized in 1940 as a junior lieutenant, he was interned by the Vichy government and then deported to the Buchenwald concentration camp from 1942 to 1945 after refusing to cooperate with the Nazis. After his release, he was awarded the Military Cross of 1939-1945 [4] [5] .
After the war in 1949, he changed his last name to Dassault and renamed the company Avions Marcel Dassault . Dassault was the pseudonym of his brother, the general and one of the commanders of the French Resistance, Darius Paul Bloch . In 1950, Marcel Dassault adopted Catholicism [7] .
Since 1951, engaged in political activities. He was a deputy to the National Assembly from 1951 to 1955 and from 1958 until his death, was twice elected to the Senate [4] [7]
In addition to business and politics, Dassault took part in the cultural life of France, in particular, produced films and wrote scripts. In 1985, Dassault was one of the richest men in France. Cavalier of the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor [5] . Dassault was also a major publisher, in particular, he founded Jours de France magazine.
Dassault company became the main aircraft manufacturer for the French Air Force . Marcel actively participated in the development of new types of aircraft up to the age of 60, after which the company was headed by his son Serge Dassault .
Marcel Dassault died on April 17, 1986 in Neuilly-sur-Seine , aged 94, and was buried in Passy cemetery in Paris .
