Biography

Nikolay Vasilchenko was born on February 23, 1923 in the village of Yurievo (now the Putivl district of the Sumy region of Ukraine ) in a peasant family. He graduated from high school, worked at a peat enterprise in Putivl . In August 1941, Vasilchenko was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since September 1942 - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. He took part in the battles on the Stalingrad , South , 3rd and 4th Ukrainian, 1st Belorussian fronts. By April 1945, Sergeant Nikolai Vasilchenko commanded the guns of the 44th Guards Cannon Artillery Brigade of the 5th Shock Army of the 1st Belorussian Front. He distinguished himself during the assault on Berlin [1] .

During the battles in Berlin, being part of one of the assault groups, he supported the infantry units leading the offensive with the fire of his guns mounted on direct fire. On April 28 , moving the gun forward on his hands, Vasilchenko destroyed the enemy firing points with fire [1] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 31, 1945, for “exceptional courage and bravery shown during the storming of Berlin” of the Guard, Sergeant Nikolai Vasilchenko was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 6813 [1] .

After the war, Vasilchenko was demobilized. He lived in the village of Simeiz, Crimean region of the Ukrainian SSR , worked as an electrician in the sanatorium "Red Lighthouse". He died on September 17, 1985, was buried in Simeiz [1] .

He was also awarded the orders of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree and the Red Star , as well as a number of medals [1] .
