The composition illustrates the story, depicting a miserable, trying to hide either from rain and wind, or from his torment and fears of teacher Belikov [1] . It was installed in front of the left wing facade of the Taganrog men's classical gymnasium , in which Anton Chekhov studied and worked one of the prototypes of Belikov, “a man in a case”.
The exact prototype of Belikov is unknown. Some contemporaries (including V. G. Bogoraz and M. P. Chekhov ) believed that the prototype of “a man in a case” was the teacher of the ancient Greek language and inspector of the Taganrog gymnasium A. F. Dyakonov , while others described the character traits of Dyakonov, refuting the opinion first. So, P. P. Filevsky noted Dyakonov’s generosity and wrote: “I affirm positively that there is nothing in common between“ A Man in a Case ”and A. F. Dyakonov, and there is no local color in this piece of A. P. Chekhov” [2] .
The costs of the municipal budget for the manufacture of sculpture and its installation amounted to 723 802 rubles [3] . The monument is a municipal property.
Creation History
On the eve of the Chekhov anniversary, the city administration held a competition for the creation of this sculpture, in which David Begalov won [4] . The monument was inaugurated on January 27, 2010, during events dedicated to the 150th anniversary of A. P. Chekhov [1] .
