Creation History
The sculpture "St. Gregory I" was intended for the Piccolomini Chapel in the Cathedral of Siena. Michelangelo signed a contract for fifteen statues for the altar, which were to be made before 1504 . But only four statues were executed (" St. Paul ", " St. Peter ", "St. Gregory I" and " St. Pius I ") [1] .
Neither Vasari nor Kondivi mention these works by Michelangelo. Lawrence Jenkens, a professor at the University of New Orleans [2] , believes that Michelangelo himself could relate to these works as the results of youth and haste [3] .
Description
The statue depicts St. Gregory I , the sixty-fourth Pope of Rome. On the head of the saint is the papal tiara. He holds a book in front of him, and his head is slightly tilted to the right, which heightens the feeling of triumph. The left leg is slightly bent forward, but this movement is almost completely obscured by the heavy folds of clothing.
The sculpture is located on the upper tier of the altar, on the right, above the " Saint Paul ."
Notes
- but. ^ The altar itself was commissioned by Andrea Breno ( ital. Andrea Bregno ) in the early 1480s [3]
- b. ^ The contract provided that before starting work, Michelangelo had to provide sketches of statues on paper so that “their clothes and gestures could be seen (...) so that you could add or remove something unnecessary if necessary” [4] .
