Karelia attracts tourists primarily with its ecologically clean nature, low population density and competitive prices. However, the tourist service in the republic is still in its infancy. Travel companies of Karelia specialize in summer and winter activities, one way or another connected with nature.

In summer, Karelia is popular with lovers of water tourism , travelers on bicycles and cars, among fishermen and hunters. Cruise ships of various companies ply the Ladoga and Onega lakes.

In winter, in Karelia there is an opportunity to engage in all types of skiing, take part in dog and reindeer sledding safaris, and make a trip on snowmobiles. Travel agencies offer a variety of routes with sightseeing, historical and cultural monuments. Since January 2012, the international dog sled race “ Through the Land of Sampo ” has been held. Equestrian tourism is developing.

Year-round sanatoriums operate in the village of Marcial waters , the first Russian resort founded in 1719 by decree of Peter the Great .

Tourists visiting the western part of the republic declared as a border zone should have an identity card (general passports, children - birth certificates) for possible passport control. [2]
