Her father married her to the knight Heinrich of Burgundy in gratitude for his help in the fight against the Moors and gave to the dowry the county of Portucale (later Portugal), recently conquered from the Moors. Thus, Henry became the count of Portugal. He ruled as a vassal of Alfonso VI, covering the territory of Galicia from Muslim raids. After the death of Alfonso VI (1109), he was succeeded by his legitimate daughter Urraca , after which Count Henry invaded Leon , hoping to expand his possessions.

Of all the children, from the marriage of Teresa and Henry to adulthood, only Afonso Enriques survived. After the death of his father (1112), Athos was 3 years old. In fact, Theresa ruled Portugal. She refused to pay vassal service to her half-sister Queen Leon and Castile Urraca. Many years of struggle between the sisters Teresa and Urraka ended in the fact that in 1121 the army of Teresa was defeated, and she herself was besieged in the castle of Lanozo. Nevertheless, Teresa managed to make peace and retain possession of the Portuguese county , thanks in large part to the archbishops of Diogo Gelmires Santiago de Compostela and Burdin Bragan - political rivals temporarily united against Urraca.

Subsequently, Theresa had a relationship with the Galician Count Fernan Peres , as a result of which she came into conflict with her own son Afonso, whom she, along with Archbishop Burdin, expelled from the county. Afonso gathered an army and started a war against his mother (1123). He defeated Theresa's troops at Guimaraes (1128), captured his mother and imprisoned him in a monastery.

Teresa died in 1130. According to other sources, the countess, along with Fernand Peres, completed her days in Galicia . Afonso established himself on the throne of the Portuguese county.
