Mk 74 (fire control system)

Mk 74 (Tartar) is a ship’s missile weapon control system developed by Raytheon in conjunction with General Electric Ordnance Systems and the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory for US Navy air defense systems [1] . Software development for the LMS was also handled by Raytheon (a software development contract worth $ 393,535). It was originally intended to control the Tartar missile launcher, later, with the introduction of the Standard missiles in the US Navy, the compatibility of the Mk 74 SLA with these missiles was ensured. One of the components of the system was the AN / SPG-51 target illumination radar, which ensured target tracking and missile guidance.

Description

Mk 74 or Tartar is an integral part of the missile system, designed for placement on surface ships and firing at aerial and surface targets. It receives target coordinates from the target designation system and provides tracking of the target, issuing a command to raise the rocket to the launch position, pre-launch command, constant illumination of the target during its interception, and issuing radio control missiles. It can provide all-round, sector and raster visibility at the operator’s command.

The Mk 74 system has undergone several modifications, the last of which, Mod 14/15, was located on the ships CGN-36, CGN-37, CGN-40, CGN-41 and ships of the DDG-993 type. This modification of the system provides guidance missiles SM-2 to maximum range.
