Femarnbelt Tunnel - a project for the construction of a tunnel under the Strait of Femarn-Belt , separating Denmark and Germany . The start of construction work is scheduled for 2020, and the completion date is 2028 [1] [2] .
The total cost of the work is estimated at 8.7 billion euros, and the European Union, for its part, will allocate 590 million euros for the construction [3] .
The length of the tunnel will be 18 kilometers. Two railway tracks and a four-lane highway will be laid on the site. Presumably, this distance can be covered in seven minutes by train and in 15 minutes by car, and therefore the time on the train between Hamburg and Copenhagen will be reduced to about two instead of the current five hours.

Bridge Design
Previously planned as the Femarnbelt Bridge , a project linking the German island of Fehmarn with the Danish island of Lolland with a bridge that should cross the 18-km Baltic Sea Baltic Sea Belt. Construction was planned to be completed by 2018 [4] .
Project History
On June 29, 2007, an Interim Agreement was reached in Berlin between the Danish and German governments (represented by their ministers of transport) to begin construction of the bridge [5] . The information announced by Danish radio claimed that the Femarnbelt bridge would be 19 kilometers long and about 2 kilometers west of Rødby in Denmark, in Puttgarden on the island of Femarn, which is already connected by a bridge to mainland Germany. Construction was supposed to begin in 2011 and be completed in 2018.
The bridge will be financed by state guaranteed loans, which will be covered by tolls and travel. Denmark will be fully responsible for securing financing for this project; an estimated cost of 35 billion Danish kroner or 4.7 billion euros [6] . German participation will be limited to the development of ground facilities on the German side [7] . Denmark will receive ownership of the bridge, it will be allowed to receive travel fees to repay the loan and take advantage of the employment opportunity at the paid station. An agreement between ministers of transport will need to be ratified by national parliaments, but no difficulties are expected.
Criticism
There are objections from the local population of Germany, who fear the loss of jobs on today's intensive ferry service, and environmentalists who believe that wild animals will suffer from this project [8] .
The Gedser-Rostock bridge with a length of about 50 kilometers was proposed as an alternative to the Femarnbelt bridge. Proponents of this project claim that it would be a link from Scandinavia to Berlin .
Bridge abandonment
November 30, 2010 it became known that the design of the tunnel is more preferable than the design of the bridge - due to lower risks in the construction of such an extended facility [9] .
