Description
The sculpture depicts a seated Virgin Mary with little Jesus and John the Baptist. Jesus stretched out on his mother’s lap across the entire tondo plane, and looked over his right shoulder at John, who stands above him and holds out a bird to him. Jesus seems scared [2] , and his mother watches them playfully, with a slight smile. Here, the central figure is the child himself, not the Madonna. According to Viktor Lazarev , Leonardo’s influence on Michelangelo can be traced in this tondo, because in this work “there is a more lively arrangement of figures, a more flexible compositional rhythm, softer forms and a richer play of chiaroscuro, which involuntarily makes Leonardo“ sfumato ”recall [3] .
This tondo is more lyrical, cheerful than Pitti's tondo . James Hall ( born James Hall ) believes that “no other Madonna and child contains such an emotional and plot-thematic charge” [4] . Raphael’s painting “The Madonna and the Carduelis ” [5] is close in mood, but Michelangelo’s composition is more dynamic [6] .
Non finito technique
Tondo marble is even more roughly processed than Tondo Pitti . The figure of Jesus is most elaborated, while the figures of Mary and John the Baptist barely appear on the background [6] . Despite the fact that Vasari wrote about tondo as a work begun, but not finished [1] , researchers still argue about this. Lazarev agreed with Vasari, however, he also said that in this incompleteness “there are great spells” [3] . The art critic William Wallace believes that the “non finito” technique in this work of the sculptor emphasizes the completeness of the images and creates an atmospheric background [7] . According to Eric Schigliano, the “imperfection” is tondo doubtful, since Taddeo did not refuse the order, and did not insist on “polishing” or refinement [8] .
