History
The church is associated with giving the city the status of the capital of the new province of Pescara, founded in 1927 . The ancient church of St. Tsetei, which was in disrepair, was demolished to make way for the construction of a new church (on the sidewalk in front of the church there were traces of the old church). The construction of a new church was helped by Gabriele D'Annunzio , who invested personal funds in the construction. He consulted with the architect Cesare Bazzani about the place in the temple for the burial of the mother. All church construction work was completed in 1939 . The facade of the temple was restored after the events of World War II .
The church received the status of a cathedral in 1977 , becoming the main temple of the archdiocese of Pescara Penne.
Description
The church was built in the traditional Romanesque style of Abruzzo. It bears the features of the ancient church of Holy Jerusalem of the XI century , with a facade of strictly rectangular shape, decorated with roses , characteristic of this and neighboring regions. The project was approved jointly by the architect Bazzani and D'Annunzio.
Also on the facade are portals with round arches that define the internal division of the basilica into three naves , marked on the outside with pilasters . On the left side of the facade, the bell tower on a square base with an octagonal end, and on the right adjoins a small baptistery .
As already mentioned, the basilica has three naves. The three-part division is set by marble columns , the church is well lit through a system of windows, the choirs are extended by the apse . The church has an elevated transept , which corresponds to the Romanesque style. On one side of the transept is the chapel of St. Tetei (Keteus). On the other side, the transept ends with the grave of Louise de Benedictis, the mother of the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio, whose tombstone adorns a monument by Arrigo Minerbi depicting a sleeping young woman. Another grave in the cathedral belongs to Monsignor Antonio Yanucci, Honorary Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Pescara Penne from 1959 to 1990 . He was buried on October 16, 2008 in the Baptistery Hall. Inside the church there are several statues of saints and a picture of Guercino , depicting St. Francis of Assisi . The attraction is also the organ of the cathedral, one of the most famous in the region.
