Drachten ( Dutch: Drachten ) is a city in the Netherlands , in Friesland, in the community of Smallingerland .

Recently known thanks to the experiment in traffic control conducted in it. The idea of a " common space ", first developed by Hans Monderman , is that almost all traffic lights and signs have been removed from the city center to increase road safety, as it is assumed that drivers will be more careful if they are know that they cannot rely solely on strict rules. Earlier in the city center there were 8 accidents per year, after the introduction of the system in 2003, their number was reduced to zero [1] .
In September 2007, the German city of Bomte hosted a similar scheme [2] .
