Biography

Tassilon came from the Agilolfing clan. He was the son of Garibald I , the first known by the name of the Duke of Bavaria, and Waldrad , daughter of the Lombard king Wajo . His brothers were the Duke of Bavaria Grimoald I and the Duke of Asti (since 589 ) Gundoald , and his sister was the Lombard Queen Theodelind .

According to Paul Deacon , Tassilon I received the rex title from King of Australia Hildebert II after the end of the Franks - Bavarian war. [1] The war began during the predecessor of Tassilon I, Duke Garibald I, when he entered into a marriage with the Lombards. Although it is not known for certain whether Garibald I died or was overthrown, there is a version that Hildebert II deposed Garibald I and his son Grimoald I, and put Tassilon I in their place [2] . It is also not clear what relation Tassilon I had to Garibald, but even if he was not the son of Garibald, there probably were rather close family ties between them. The fact that Hildebert II gave the title of king to Thassilon I indicates the significant influence of the Franks on the state of affairs in Bavaria.

Pavel Deacon also reports that in 595 Tassilon moved to the lands of the Slavs (probably in the recently conquered East Tyrol and Carinthia ), from where he returned with victory and great booty [1] . The joy of this victory was short-lived. According to the testimony of Paul Deacon, 2000 Bavars, with a new attempt to invade the lands of the Slavs, were destroyed by their allies by the Avars led by the kagan [3] .

Thassilon I died in 610, and was succeeded by his son Garibald II .
