Short Biography
Thomas M. Lane was born on September 19, 1994 in Chardon, Ohio , USA . He grew up quite a calm child. In 2002, his father, Thomas Lane Sr., received a year in prison for attempted murder. [1] He was a loner at school and was often bullied by other students. At the age of 15, in December 2009, Thomas Lane was twice arrested for fighting in a public place. [2] On his page on the Facebook social network, hints about the execution of schoolchildren appeared twice. On December 30, 2011, he updated his status with the inscription “Die you all ...”, and on January 20, 2012 he wrote a detailed text about his hatred of humanity. [3] According to the offender, he had very great difficulties in communicating with his peers, and it was difficult for him to even just talk to them. [4] According to friends, Lane was often depressed, but not enough to start killing. The year before the murders, Thomas Lane moved from Chardon High School to Lake Academy. From the characteristics it followed that he was very friendly, but closed, not self-confident and taciturn. [5] The shooter admitted that the idea to arrange shooting at a former school came to him three weeks before it happened.
Weapons
The murder weapon was a 22-gauge semi-automatic Ruger Mk III pistol . The investigation established that the weapon along with the ammunition was stolen by a teenager from his uncle on February 26, 2012. Also at the time of the crime, Thomas Lane had a knife. After the killings, Lane managed to throw the gun away. [6]
February 27, 2012
On Monday, February 27, 2012, at about 7:30 am local time, Thomas TJ Lane in a T-shirt with the inscription “Killer” armed with a pistol ran into the Chardon High School cafeteria at the very height of the morning breakfast and fired 10 shots at a group of randomly selected students sitting at one of the tables. Five people came under fire. 16-year-old Daniel Parmertor died on the spot from a head wound. [7] [8] Four people were taken to the hospital with severe gunshot wounds. Also, 18-year-old Joy Rickers received several injuries as a result of a panic jump under the table and she was provided with medical care on the spot. Meanwhile, school gym coach Frank Hall disarmed the shooter, but Tom managed to escape and after a while he was arrested by assistant to the sheriff John Bilikik. [9] At the same time, Lane showed no resistance; they had only a small conversation:
(Upon arrest)
- What's your name?
- TJ Lane.
- What are you doing?
“I just killed a few people.”
- Why?- I do not know.
(On the way to the sheriff’s office)
- How old are you?
- Seventeen.
- Do you have problems?
- Not.
- Did you take drugs?
- Not.
- Alcohol?
- Not.
- Are you depressed?
- Not.
- How many people do you think you killed?
- I have no idea.
“Did someone piss you off?”- No, nobody pissed me off. I have no problems with people, they don’t even talk to me.
Thomas repeated several times that he did not know why he had done this. He told Bilikik that he had stolen weapons from his uncle’s house the day before the shooting. And he admitted that the idea to arrange a massacre arose about four weeks ago. He also added that he deliberately aimed at his heads so as not to torture his victims allegedly. [ten]
February 28, 2012 at 0:42, without regaining consciousness, the second victim of the shooter died - 17-year-old Russell King Jr. [11] [12] A few hours later, the third wounded student, 16-year-old Dimitries Hyulin, also died. [13] 17-year-old Nick Wallseck, who received four injuries, was transferred from intensive care to the general regime ward, but was immobilized due to injuries. [14] A 16-year-old Nate Muller, who received a tangential head wound, was discharged the next day. [15]
Society reaction
Ohio Governor John Kasich , an hour later, spoke on radio and television with a statement on the tragedy. He praised the speed of the police and praised the teacher who had stopped shooting. The governor also promised to provide material assistance to the families of the dead and injured students. [16] The next day, state flags were lowered and mourning was declared. [17]
On February 28, all city schools were closed as a sign of mourning. [18] Education in all schools returned to normal only on March 2, 2012 . [19] In the evening of February 27 and all day on February 28, memorial services were held in many churches of the city, and prayers were made for the speedy healing of the wounded. Several thousand people took part in these events. Almost all of them were dressed in red (Chardon High School colors) in support of the school. [20] On the evening of February 27, United Way of America set up a charity fund where anyone could transfer money to help the families of the victims and the dead. In just one day, more than $ 150,000 was credited to the account [20] . On February 28, 2012, US President Barack Obama called the Ohio Governor and expressed condolences on behalf of his family in connection with the incident. [21] On March 1, 2012, 230 students, teachers, and school staff participated in the “Sorrow March”, organized through the social network Facebook . They walked from the city center to the school and laid flowers at the entrance to the cafeteria, in memory of the victims [7] [16] .
March 2, 2012, the school resumed classes as usual. The cafeteria also began to work as usual, only the table at which the victims of the shooting were sitting was covered with a white tablecloth, and on it stood a burning candle and portraits of the dead and injured. [22]
All the dead were buried on March 3, 2012 at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Crendon. Before that, coffins with bodies were taken around the city, accompanied by 4 bikers from the local biker club, who were chosen for the guard of honor. The ceremony was attended by one and a half thousand people. [23]
Investigation and trial
On February 28, 2012, the first hearing in the Lane case took place. Attorney David Joyce said that Thomas Lane admitted that he was not familiar with the victims and randomly selected them. The offender also pleaded guilty to the killings. The court decided to keep him in custody at the Geauga County Juvenile Court for minors. During the meeting, Thomas behaved quite calmly. He answered the questions briefly. [24]
March 6, 2012 Attorney David Joyce asked the court to accuse Thomas Lane of the accused as an adult. On April 9, 2012, it was decided to judge Thomas TJ Lane as an adult. At a meeting on May 2, 2012, the shooter was declared mentally unhealthy, but this did not exonerate him from criminal liability. On May 24, 2012, Judge Timothy Grendell ruled that Lane would not be released on bail. In the case of a guilty verdict, Lane can spend his whole life in prison , but he does not face capital punishment .
At a court hearing on June 8, 2012, Lane was finally charged on the following points: murder of three people under aggravating circumstances, attempted murder of three people, resulting in serious bodily harm, assault with a firearm. Lane pleaded not guilty to these charges. The court established a bail of $ 1,000,000. On June 18, 2012, Lane was supposed to be transferred from the Juvenile Detention Center to an adult prison, but thanks to the efforts of a lawyer, the court decided on June 20, 2012 that he could stay for a fee of $ 120 per week. The next court session was scheduled for January 14, 2013 [25] [26] , but was held a month and a half later.
On February 26, 2013, Thomas TJ Lane pleaded guilty to three episodes of aggravated murder, two episodes of attempted murder and one episode of an attack on a person. After these confessions, prosecutors said they would not demand the death penalty for him, but would confine themselves to life imprisonment.
Court Completion
Prosecutors could not demand the death penalty for Lane, because at the time the crime was committed, he was a minor. The conclusion of the psychiatric examination on TJ Lane states that he suffers from hallucinations, both auditory (possibly imperative) and, at least, visual; Lane was also diagnosed with chronic endogenous psychosis. However, at the time of the crime, Thomas was declared sane. On February 26, 2013, the teenager, admitting his guilt, did not name the reasons that prompted him to kill.
At the crucial court hearing, Lane appeared in a blue shirt, under which he put on a white T-shirt with the inscription "killer", displayed in black marker. After pronouncing the last word, the criminal showed the “ middle finger ” to the relatives of his victims who were present in the hall, saying that he was now masturbating with the hand with which he pulled the trigger, in memory of what had happened, and during the announcement of the sentence he smiled ironically.
On March 19, 2013, the court sentenced 18-year-old Thomas Lane in the aggregate of the crimes he committed to three life terms of imprisonment without the right to parole.
Prison and Escape
Since November 5, 2013, Lane has been tightened his detention regime, as he maliciously violated discipline in the prison and several times fought with other prisoners. In the same month, he served ten days in a punishment cell for attempting to attack a guard. Prison guards also several times found smuggled marijuana in Lane’s cell.
On August 28, 2014, Lane was again sent to solitary confinement for addressing the need for a prison jail [27] .
At 7:38 p.m. on September 11, 2014, 19-year-old Thomas TJ Lane, along with his 45-year-old cellmate Clifford Earle Opperud, sentenced to 25 years in prison with the possibility of early release after 12 years, for a series of armed robberies committed in 2010 , and another prisoner - 33-year-old Lindsay Bruce, also sentenced to life imprisonment without the right to release for the murder of a 5-year-old girl in 2009 , managed to escape from the Allen Oakwood Correctional Institution prison, climbing over the wall using a makeshift staircase. The latter was delayed after less than an hour of searching. Lane was found around 1:20 a.m. on September 12, hiding in a forest just a few hundred meters from the prison. A few hours later (about 5 a.m.), Opperud was also captured 11 kilometers from the correctional facility.
On September 20, 2014, all three were transferred to Ohio State Penitentiary, a security prison with a 3rd security level, located in Youngstown , where Lane, Clifford Earl Opperud and Lindsay Bruce will be locked up 23 hours a day. in their solitary cells with an area of 3 by 4 meters [28] .
According to February 2016 , after returning to jail in Lane’s cell, they often continue to find smuggled marijuana. In addition, he often ends up in a punishment cell for fights with prisoners and guards. [29]
