Roman colonization
During the period of the Roman Republic , from the II century BC. e. , begins the process of colonization by the Romans of the territories of northeastern Italy. The reasons that led the Romans to gain a foothold in Venetia were related to the strategic interests of their growing state, and in 183 BC. e. [1] Venetian lands entered the province of Cisalpine Gaul . During this period, Transalpine Gauls attempted to settle in Venetia, which served as an impetus for the Romans to more actively explore the area. Fragmentedly, these events are reflected in the work of the Roman historian Titus Livius [2] , who reports that the Roman Senate alarmed the intention of the Gauls, relatively peacefully resettled in 186 BC. e. [3] to the Venetian territory, build a city here [~ 1] . Therefore, through diplomatic pressure, the Gauls were expelled, and during the preparation of the war with the neighbors of the Venets - by the Istrians , a Roman colony was withdrawn to the area where these Gallic immigrants tried to settle. It was founded in 181 BC. e. and received the name Aquileia [4] .
Later, the colonization of Venetia by the Romans led to the Romanization of this region.
