Biography
Born in the family of Ph.D. Axel Heinriks and Johann Matilda Rönholm.
During the First World War, he joined the ranger movement and served in the 27th Royal Prussian Jäger Battalion . Returning to Finland, he led the 7th Jäger Battalion , participated in the battles of Tampere and the Karelian Isthmus .
Later he served in the General Staff, in 1925-1928 he studied in France, commanded the 1st Division, was an inspector of the Ministry of Defense .
After the outbreak of the Winter War, he was appointed commander of the 3rd Army Corps who was responsible for the defense of the eastern part of the Karelian Isthmus, and on February 19, 1940 - the commander of the army of the Karelian Isthmus .
After the war, he commanded the ground forces, headed the General Staff from May 16, 1940 to June 29, 1941 and from January 29, 1942 to October 6, 1944. As the representative of the commander in chief, he was responsible for military relations with Germany in January-February and in May-June 1941. He commanded the Karelian army (June 29, 1941 - January 29, 1942) during the capture of East Karelia.
Mannerheim’s closest adviser on military policy in 1941-1945 and an expert during negotiations on the 1948 friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance treaty . After the end of the continuation war from December 31, 1944 to June 30, 1945, he commanded the Defense Forces, and resigned when the “case of concealing weapons by Finnish military personnel to resist the possible coming of the Communists to power” was opened ( Finnish.
